The Snapshot

Out of college, I began my career experience at Allison Gas Turbines/Detroit Diesel Allison in Indianapolis, IN. From there, I entered the startup world, working for various companies in the suburbs of Detroit, in Silicon Valley, and here in Dayton. After gaining a lot of insight and connections through my experience working with startups, I soon started pursuing my own ventures with my own mission in mind.

In late 2010, I wrote the business plan for Spintech, LLC and we hit the ground running. We licensed some IP from Cornerstone Research Group and successfully commercialized it. Our concept allows for the fabrication of composite parts with higher quality, lower cost, and faster throughput– in other words, better, cheaper, faster. We did this by using shape memory polymers to create a game-changing tooling solution. This is my fourth startup company and I love the diverse job requirements and fast pace that goes with working at a startup.

The best part of being an entrepreneur is you learn and execute a broad range of responsibilities. The worst thing is you have to execute what the business needs, even things you don’t like to do. Because of this, I quickly learned you have to be a multi-tasker and a quick study to be an entrepreneur (basically learning to drink from a fire hose).

The Dayton startup scene is gaining serious traction due to the expanding support providers, like TEC, and the growing national attention on that there is amazing innovation happening here. There’s a ton of resources like the ESP Program, TEC, Greene County with their Job Creation Grants, and the State of Ohio with their Job Creation Grants.

The Advice

Starting out, I wish would have I known the best way to structure the capitalization of the business to attract initial and future growth investment. I recommend “Competitive Strategy” by Michael E. Porter and “Marketing High Technology” by William H. Davidow.

The Connection

  • Attended or presented at ESP Startup Showcase
  • Utilize(d) an ESP EIR
  • Received ESP Funding
  • Volunteered Time for TEC
